Company Profile

PGS is a technology focused oilfield service company principally involved in providing geophysical services worldwide. The company provides a broad range of geophysical and reservoir services, including seismic data acquisition, processing and interpretation plus field evaluation.

Since the start of the company in 1991, PGS has:

  • Pioneered the development of multi-streamer seismic acquisition, producing increasingly efficient, high-quality 3D seismic data for the oil industry
  • Developed in-house expertise in geology, geophysics, reservoir and production
  • Introduced high-density 3D seismic (HD3D) in all environments: streamer, seafloor (4C) and land seismic

With its headquarters in Oslo, Norway, the company has offices in 22 different countries with larger regional offices in London, Houston and Singapore.

PGS’ main competitive advantages are a strong technology base, a comprehensive knowledge base and a culture for innovation and new ideas.

    Our Geophysical Business

Geophysical data is used by companies to help them find oil and gas and to determine the size and structure of known reservoirs. Companies also use this information in evaluating whether to acquire new leases or licenses in areas with potential accumulations of oil and gas. The data is also used in selecting drilling locations, in modeling oil and gas reserves and in managing producing reservoirs.

The seismic data can be acquired and processed using different technology:

    • 2 dimensional (2D) - recorded and processed in a single line direction
    • 3 dimensional (3D)- numerous closely spaced lines providing a high spatial sampling of data
    • 4 Dimensional (4D) - 3D surveys acquired at different times (also called time lapse seismic) over the same area to evaluate subsurface geophysical conditions that may change over time due to the depletion and production of reservoir fluids

More recently PGS has promoted the use of High Density 3D (HD3D) technology in all aspects of its work to acquire 3D data with significantly higher trace densities.  HD3D allows for improved resolution of the subsurface and higher quality images of the reservoirs.

We manage our geophysical services through two groups:

    • Marine Geophysical- Streamer seismic data acquisition, marine multi-client library and data processing;
    • Onshore- Seismic operations on land and in very shallow water and transition zones, including our onshore multi-client library

    Marine

    Marine Acquisition

In the Marine Geophysical group PGS has unrivalled experience in acquisition which is reflected in the performance and efficiency of its vessels.

    The streamer fleet consists of:

    • 4 classic streamer vessels capable of towing up to 6 streamers
    • 6 Ramform vessels capable of towing up to 20 streamers

The operational efficiency of the Ramforms means that PGS is the only company that regularly offers 12 or more streamers as a standard acquisition configuration. Such technology and efficiency provides the perfect platform for Marine High Density 3D (HD3D).

    Data Processing

PGS provides seismic data processing services for its own acquisition operations and also for third parties. Generally, PGS will compete for data processing contracts on a competitive bid basis. These contracts generally provide for the customer to pay a set fee per square kilometer processed for a prescribed set of processing procedures.

PGS acquires and processes seismic data both on an exclusive contract basis for its customers and on its own behalf as multi-client data for licensing to multiple customers on a non-exclusive basis.

Backed by a strong Research and Development organization PGS has developed its own advanced processing system called Cube Manager which is deployed for both Onshore and Marine operations in strategically located centers around the world. The use of its proprietary imaging software coupled with its integrated visualization holoSeis, helps to reduce the risks in exploration and production.

    Onshore

The PGS Onshore business consists of all seismic acquisition operations on land, shallow water and transition zones. The Onshore group also has its own onshore multi-client library. While PGS conduct contract onshore seismic acquisition throughout the world the PGS Onshore multi-client library is entirely in the United States. The active crew counts have ranged from four to eight, operating in various areas including more recently in Mexico, the United States, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Bolivia and Canada. PGS also has environmental specific operating equipment in Alaska and in the Middle East.  PGS Onshore provides a strong differentiator in its social responsibilities and sustainable development in countries where it has major operations.

    Contract and Multi-Client Operations

PGS acquires seismic data both on an exclusive contract basis for our customers and on its own behalf as multi-client data for licensing to multiple customers on a non-exclusive basis.

    Contract Operations:

    • Clients direct the scope and extent of the survey and retain ownership of the data.
    • Under this turnkey method, the cost to clients is based upon the number of seismic lines or square kilometers of seismic data collected.

    Multi-Client Operations:

    • From the client perspective the licensing of multi-client seismic data on a non-exclusive basis is typically less expensive on a per unit basis than acquiring the seismic data on an exclusive basis.
    • From the perspective of PGS the multi-client seismic data is more cost effective to acquire and may be sold a number of times to different clients over a period of years.

PGS owns a significant data library of marine multi-client data in most of the major oil and gas basins of the world, including the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea, Offshore West Africa, Offshore Brazil and the Asia Pacific region. The PGS Onshore library is entirely in North America.
