PGS donation will support Red Cross disaster relief on Haiti |
PGS has responded to the recent massive earthquake damage in Haiti, one of the world's poorest countries, with a donation of $50,000 to the aid effort. The money will be transferred via the Norwegian chapter of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent organization (IFRC).
The IFRC has estimated that it will require 103 million US dollars to assist the 300,000 people of Haiti for three years. It is calling for charitable donations and local chapters worldwide are doing their best to contribute.
"The scale and magnitude of this disaster, relayed around the world in pictures, has shocked and touched us all. Though PGS has no direct business connections with Haiti, we operate as citizens of the world and feel a humanitarian duty to offer a helping hand in a situation of acute and desperate need," said Jon Erik Reinhardsen, CEO.
The first IFRC field hospitals are being set up outside the national hospital. Planes are arriving with urgent medical aid and expertise: surgeons, anesthetists and other health personnel. On the ground people are dying of simple injuries such as broken bones and untreated wounds. Treatment of the injured can soon begin and the PGS donation will support this operation.
