New PGS Multi-client 2D Survey in Côte d’Ivoire

PGS, in co-operation with Petroci, has completed the acquisition, processing and interpretation of over 6,500 km of new 2D seismic data offshore Côte d’Ivoire. The data are now available for licensing from PGS.

The new seismic will allow oil companies to investigate the petroleum potential of an area that up to now has seen little exploration. The dataset covers the entire deepwater of Côte d’Ivoire, from the maritime border with Liberia in the west to Ghana in the east.

The new 2D survey includes lines that tie key exploration wells in more shallow water. Acquired with a 8500m cable to allow for imaging of the full sedimentary section, the data were processed using Kirchoff pre-stack time migration.

Exploration in the Côte d’Ivoire basin in recent years has led to the discovery of significant volumes of hydrocarbons. In 2001, the Baobab field was discovered and first production from this field was achieved in 2005. In 2007, another large oil discovery, Mahogany/Hyedua, was made in neighbouring Ghana, in an extension of the same sedimentary basin. This discovery proved the long held belief in the potential for stratigraphic traps in this region.

The completed interpretation of the PGS Multi-Client 2D data shows prospects and leads in both the deeper syn-rift section and also in the shallower post, rift. The data also indicates a thicker sedimentary section that had previously been expected, providing much more extensive potential source kitchens than had been mapped to date.
