Great Australian Bight

This is the first in a series of PGS Australasian webinars. With BP’s drilling campaign fast approaching, we take the opportunity to review PGS’ 20 000 sq. km of contiguous PSDM data in the Great Australian Bight and offer some insights into prospectivity.

The Jurassic-Cretaceous Bight Basin is a large extensional, passive margin basin that extends along the southern margin of Australia, straddling the border of WA and SA. The basin underlies the continental shelf and slope, including two broad bathymetric terraces, in water depths ranging from less than 200 to over 4000 metres. The largest sedimentary depocentre, in excess of 15km thick, is the Ceduna Sub-basin. The Ceduna Sub-basin has a potentially prospective Early to Late Cretaceous sedimentary succession (fluviatile, deltaic and marginal marine to marine sediments). The presence of thick deltaic units and indications of active petroleum systems are analogous to the highly prolific Niger delta on the west coast of Africa but the Bight Basin remains one of the largest and least explored passive margins in the world.

PGS are presenting an interactive Webinar presentation showcasing our latest GeoStreamer MC3D survey, Springboard MC3D. We will cover the acquisition and our geologically driven PSDM processing workflows, some prospectivity highlights for the 8 001 sq. km MultiClient 3D survey, and the seamless merge with the adjacent BP Ceduna survey to create the final 20 000 sq. km MC PSDM volume.
