Silke Bude explains how the environmental impact of marine seismic surveys are defined and managed according to prescribed noise thresholds. A variety of flexible and sophisticated sound propagation modeling methods are used in combination with established environmental metrics customized to the hearing capabilities of different mammal species. Examples of responsible survey management are given for uniquely different compliance challenges in offshore South Africa and Brazil.
