Employing local - example
Though we’re a global operator, we support local employment around the world. In Brazil, PGS supported a national employment initiative started in 2010 to improve the English language skills of the Brazilian nationals we employ by providing them with onboard and off-shift language lessons.
Since PGS started operations in Brazil in 1995, we have done our best to follow stringent local requirements to employ Brazilian nationals. Over 90% of our Rio office staff are local hires. When the Ramform Sovereign was delivered from the shipyard in 2008 it began operation offshore Brazil. Qualified candidates were hard to find and English language skills often limited. Few people had worked onboard a seismic vessel and competition for qualified Brazilians grew rapidly as the oil and gas exploration industry expanded.
Over many years, PGS has invested time and resources to establish a strong and consistent presence within the Brazilian employment market. The English lessons we provided for our Brazilian offshore staff will benefit the entire local market. At the end of 2011, over half of the people employed in our operations offshore and onshore Brazil were Brazilian nationals.
