The 25 finalists in Abelkonkurransen have been selected following the two initial rounds of the competition. In the initial rounds, Andreas Alberg (Oslo Katedralskole) came top with 200 points, followed by Erik Mjaanes (Oslo International School) and Philip Bergh Sveen (Nydalen Upper Secondary School), both with 190 points.
The finalists will gather in Trondheim on Saturday 29 February to participate in a bootcamp in mathematics. The Institute for Mathematical Studies, NTNU is responsible for the bootcamp, and will provide a number of the “trainers” for the talented young mathematicians.
The Abelkonkurranse prizes will be handed out by the minister for education and research Trine Skei Grande on Tuesday 3rd March, at 17:30 at Dokkhuset in Trondheim.
In the first round, held in November, 3218 pupils from 236 schools took part. With 359 students qualifying for the second round. Of these, 325 pupils participated in 113 schools. Here is an overview of the top third following the second round.
Abelkonkurransen (Niels Henrik Abels Math Competition) was established by the Norwegian Mathematical Society in 1981. Each year thousands of Norwegian school pupils compete to be crowned Norway’s best young mathematician and the chance to be one of six who will represent Norway at the math Olympics.
The Norwegian Mathematical Society owns Abelkonkurransen. The Institute for Mathematical Studies at NTNU has technical responsibility for Abelkonkurransen, supported by Matematikksenteret, NTNU which also has administrative responsibility for the competition.
PGS is the main sponsor for Abelkonkurransen, under an agreement signed in 2011 with the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, with an annual financial contribution to stimulate young people’s interest in mathematics.
